"In the Shadows" Finally Finished

Ok, so some purist oil painters may shudder at the thought of using acrylic paint as an under painting for oils. Personally I adore the technique as I can work very quickly in acrylics to define the basic image and then use the slow drying oil colours to achieve very subtle blending and fine detail.

Part 1.- Acrylic under painting.

This is about as far as I can get with it using acrylics. It’s taken only 2 hours. If I’d used oils to begin with it may have taken a week or more to get to this stage.

Part 2 – Applying semi transparent oil glazes.

The technique requires the application of thin layers of translucent oil colour that still allow the acrylic unde rpainting to show through. I prefer to create my glazes using a medium of equal parts of linseed oil and turpentine. It stays wet and workable for days.I rarely mix colours on a pallete preferring to use paint straight from the tube and the under painted layers alter the hue.

To redefine the highlights that may become lost by glazing over them I apply titanium white into the wet glazes and begin to subtly blend the edges.

Once this is dry, the process of applying glazes and blending titanium white into the wet paint can then be repeated.

It’s a very slow and painstaking process but the results, I personally find well worth the time and effort. I’ve overdone the highlights this time round but they can be toned down in the final stage.
