Artist's Description

A beautiful marble angel in an old rural cemetery near Mooi River in South Africa.

The inscription on the gravestone reads:

Here rest the remains
of our beloved parents
ALEXANDER LAWRENCE,
born Feb 23rd 1840,
who died at Grantleigh, Mooi River,
on June 16th 1903,
aged 63 years

AND

LYDIA LAWRENCE,
born May 15th 1846,
who also died at Grantleigh, Mooi River,
on June 23rd 1903,
aged 57 years.

IN SURE AND CERTAIN HOPE OF THE
RESURRECTION TO ETERNAL LIFE.

I’ve done some research online, and it seems I photographed the memorial of a very important family in Mooi River’s history!

Alexander Lawrence was an Irish immigrant who bought the farm Grantleigh in 1879. When the railway line reached the area in 1884, the station was built on Lawrence’s farm and he laid out the town of Lawrenceville on his land – later to be known as Mooi River.
Alexander Lawrence was a gentleman farmer, a property developer who imported “knock-down” houses in complete kit form from the UK and sold them in his area, and also a Justice of the Peace until his death on 16 June 1903.
