Childhood

My childhood had a sense
of something like innocence,
I think that everyone has that feeling
until they end up praying and kneeling.

I am not speaking out against God,
honest, I am not.

I just remember being on my
scraped, broken down knees.

But, I can’t be sure if it’s for the same reasons,
I think it has to deal with the beatings.
Did they make me wise?
I don’t…No, I apologize.

I remember the basement,
so closed in, and you, hell-bent.
Those eyes had me
compromised.

I guess I shouldn’t do this
do myself, but my bliss
was marred by ignorance
if that makes any sense.

“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”
