Dark Corners

I never saw them the first time I visited the old house beyond the woods. They kept themselves hidden, watching me from dark corners as I made my way through the building. Several times I mistook their breath on the back of my neck for a draft that ran throughout the house. With every room I entered I unknowingly dug myself deeper into this hole that was my own personal hell. Of course, on that first visit the house, although eerie and hauntingly cold, it appeared to be normal. Well, as normal as an abandoned house beyond the woods could be. I had no idea of the evil it harboured, the terrible things it could do to. The terrible things it would do to me… eventually.

I must have been there a good couple of hours, and it seemed darker than it should have been for four thirty in the evening when I left, but I didn’t think much of it. I made my way home, feeling a little uneasy and never intending to return to the house beyond the woods. Little did I know that the house had in fact had a profound effect on me. That my mind had been impregnated with the nightmares the house harboured; the very things that were its foundation. The house was haunted, and now so was I. Not by a spirit, but by darkness itself.

Of course, I wouldn’t learn of this until a few weeks after my visit. That’s when the nightmares would start. First when I was asleep, then when I was awake, until eventually it wasn’t a case of being conscious or unconscious, because the nightmares were all that I knew. I was sure it was the end of me, and that’s when I met them: other people who had been to the house, and survived.
