Corridors

Their faces are a deathly white, each one of them their heads bald. All I can see of their features are their eyes – liquid black like pools of nothingness – empty, just like their souls. The rest of their faces are veiled behind yellow-tinted surgical masks, the narrow line of material wrapped around the backs of their misshapen ears. Their surgical gowns are respectively soiled in black streaks of dirt and what I can only presume is blood. One of the creatures raises its arm and pulls on the wrist of his latex glove, holding it for a second before letting snap back onto the flesh of his pale wrist, all the while keeping his dead eyes fixed on me. My gaze falls to the filth-sodden, once white-tiled floor momentarily, and I notice the absence of feet beneath the gowns. I realise the creatures are not walking, but floating towards me, getting closer with each second that passes. The fluorescent lights flicker on and off spasmodically all around me as I weigh out my options. Behind me are some double doors that have been chained shut, seemingly for my benefit. To either side of me are long empty corridors, both of which disappear into walls of darkness. I wonder what lies within that darkness. Perhaps a fate worse than the one I will suffer if I continue to stand here, waiting for these demons to reach me. The fact that they seem to be in no hurry to do so only adds to my terror; it’s as if they are taunting me, like they know that they will get me eventually, no matter what I do. I desperately try to cling to the idea that perhaps they are wrong, and realise that if I stay where I am, I am sure to die at the hands of these creatures. And so, with that in mind, I turn, making no conscious decision as to which way I am going, and begin to run towards the darkness, not knowing what awaits me within.
