Artist's Description

This is a Snake bird or American Anhinga. I took this while visiting my cousin in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. They are abundant in the area and sit perched in the sun in order to dry their wings out.

When swimming it stretches its head and neck flat out on the surface of the water, while its body is submerged..therefore looking like a snake and getting it’s name.

The oil glands are poorly developed and its feathers aren’t as waterproof as other water birds are. In order to dry out and warm its body the bird will perch in a tree with its wings wide open until its dry. They can sit like this for quite some time.
