Is it about race or about loss?

Is it even about race or about loss?
We have lost something of humanity.
Is it even about black or white?
Or is it about despair?
We as a nation are bleeding out
Imploding, divided against our
neighbors,
Is it about you or is it about me?
Or have we become so enmeshed it hurts
Trayvon, Marley, baby Antonio,
The boys and girls of Sandy Hook,
The audience of Aurora,
56 million John and Jane Does,
Is it about you or is it about me?
At the end of the day,
As the nation dies of gunshot wounds,
And stab wounds,
As the scalpels pull us out, only to empty
Us Into the trash,
As our mothers flush us down toilets
Is it even about our beating hearts anymore?
The lies we tell ourselves
As millions sleep on street corners
Do our whispers even matter anymore?
Can we even hear one another over this
Blood scream that we have grown used to
Is it about anything anymore?
An artificial walk through a mechanized
Journey,
Humanity is a byword,
To mean nothing
To be only what governments
Want it to be.
Humanity used to be you,
It used to be me
We once included our neighbors,
Did people ever matter?
Beyond the skin?
Did people ever matter?
Beyond what is convenient?
Does humanity go beyond
the mirror?
Millions end up dead
Buried in the conscience
Of the flag
Between the stars and the stripes
There is a freedom
That once held us accountable
Now the stars have flown away
And the stripes are distorted
Freedom is violence
Freedom is immorality
Freedom is vice
Freedom is murder
Freedom is privilege
To the few
The death between our teeth
We have chewed
We digest injustice so easily
We know little else
But the bread of futility
The slavery we have endured
Is it about you or about me?
The chains that bind both black
And white,
The swastikas have been tattooed
Into our minds
The bias is in our hearts.
What in the world is going on?
We have chewed through the center
Of our humanity,
and spit ourselves out
God’s wrath spills out
As He weeps.
