Artist's Description

My husband and I went for a ride to the Morganza Spillway today, Friday, May 13, 2011, to see the locks which will be opened tomorrow in order to relieve pressure on the levees and hopefully save Baton Rouge and New Orleans from flooding. As we approached the locks where the water will be diverted from the Mississippi River to the Atchafalaya Basin, we were shocked to see what looked like a vast lake where there used to be acres and acres of farmland. It was actually the Mississippi River which had spilled over its banks! If you look at the tree line on the far horizon of my photo, that is the actual bank of the Mississippi River, and as shocking as this is, there are still ten days before the river crests! We read about this in the news, but this gives us a better idea of how serious a situation this is.

We learned as we headed back home that the road we were traveling across the Morganza Spillway locks will be closed to traffic in a few hours. This was literally our last chance to view the swollen river before people are banned from the site, the gates are opened, and the water will start to inundate the farmland on the opposite side of the road over the gates.

Please keep in your prayers all those whose homes and property are in the direct line of the diverted waters, not to mention all the wildlife which will be displaced or drowned. Thank you for viewing my image.
