Artist's Description

Taken today at Whitekirk Church, in Scotland. This was one of three places of pilgrimage before the Reformation and regularly saw 10s of thousands of pilgrims arriving to take the water from the well. The well dried up and disappeared when surrounding farmland was drained. Pope Pius II walked here barefoot from Dunbar in the snow – say 10 miles. This was in thanks for surviving a storm in the North Sea. He suffered from rheumatism thereafter though!
