Artist's Description

Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.

Where there is hatred, let me sow love;

where there is injury,pardon;

where there is doubt, faith;

where there is despair, hope;

where there is darkness, light;

and where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek

to be consoled as to console;

to be understood as to understand;

to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;

it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;

and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen

There was a time not so long ago that I interpreted St. Francis’ prayer to mean that ‘The Big Guy Up Above’ would not give to me until I gave to another first, like God was holding out on me. I was pretty stubborn in this view, not aware that I was projecting my defects of character on to God. Life ddin’t work out so well for me that way. I finally got teachable. What I learned was pretty huge. I learned that God had always been there for me, always ready and willing to answer any need; it was just that I wouldn’t allow it. When I became willing to give unto another in need, I allowed my own need to be answered. When I forgave someone, I found the willingness, the capacity to forgive myself. Pretty neat actually. I had that Big Kahuna all wrong (thank God) all along; I couldn’t feel the truth of Him with so much of my own stuff in the way. It seems He’s not nearly so hard on me as I can be on myself – not at all, not even close. When I finally went there to find him already there, all my fears were groundless. It is an amazing love. But don’t take my word for it. Open your heart and see for yourself. If it is for you as it was for me, it won’t be what’s expected. Words can’t describe it; words are a measure of previous experience; they frame what we know, what we think we know. The avenue of the heart is new ground, the mystical unknown, and like no other experience that I have ever had.
