Comet Lovejoy is now visible naked eye! These photos were taken on the morning of 22nd December 2011 from Terrigal on the Central Coast of NSW. I wish the skies were clearer – hopefully tomorrow morning.
Canon 40D, Sigma 17-70mm lens, 58s exposure.

Great location and capture Mike..all the best for the new year mate..cheers.
Thanks Warren – Terrigal is my default location to go whenever there’s something astronomical to capture towards the East :)
Beautiful capture Mike!
Thanks for putting this up Mike.
Wonderful capture, Mike..!I like the long shutter.
Thanks Adri. I would’ve preferred to keep the exposures shorter, but I need a 5D Mark II and a faster lens before I can do shorter exposures.
Crikey, that’s amazing – love a good naked-eye comet. Thanks for being the first I knew of it (although living in rain-central in the northern hemisphere doesn’t help!)
Thanks PigleT.. It reminds me a lot of Comet McNaught from 2007. Now that was a beauty. It’s unlikely you’ll get to see this one, unfortunately. It’ll likely have faded before it’s far enough North for you to see.
Stunning capture and colors Mike.
Nice shot Mike!
Thanks for all your comments. Unfortunately I was clouded out last night, but hoping for clear skies again tonight!
Wondered if you’d manage to see it. Raining in Brisbane now, but I haven’t given up hope. Maybe between the 2 of us, we might get something decent.
