Artist's Description

The first American-born saint to be canonized, Elizabeth Ann Seton’s work had a major impact on the spread of Catholicism in the Americas.

After the death of her husband, she found comfort in God, knowing that eternal life could be found with Him, thus leading her to a deep concern for the spiritual welfare of her family, friends, and all those around her. In 1805, after turning to the Blessed Virgin for comfort and guidance, Elizabeth officially converted to Catholicism.

After moving to Emmitsburg, Maryland, she founded the Sisters of Charity of St. Joseph’s, the first community for religious women established in the United States. She also began the first free Catholic school in the United States, St. Joseph’s Academy and Free School.

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, pray for us.
