Artist's Description

St. Nicholas was born in the late 200’s in Lycia. At an early age, he lost both of his parents, and, as a young man, used his inheritance to help the poor and sick. He was a devout Christian, who was ordained a priest and later served as the bishop of Myra.

St. Nicholas’ legacy is one of humility and charity. As stories tell, he was quick to give to those in need, but desired his identity remain secret. A common story tells that he helped three poor sisters who did not have enough money to pay their dowries in order to marry. St. Nicholas secretly went to their house at night and dropped a bag of coins down their chimney. Three times Nicholas did this, only being found by their father on the third time. There are many stories of this saint’s great charity to those in need.
