St. Agnes was born into a wealthy family, and well known for her beauty. Many men sought her hand in marriage, but Agnes had promised her purity to God. Whenever a man wished to marry Agnes, she would say, “Jesus Christ is my only Spouse.”

Many stories say that the young men she would turn away often became angered by her devotion to God that they would submit her name to authorities as a Christian follower.

In one instance, the son of the Governor wanted to marry Agnes, but she refused. After hearing about this, the Governor promised Agnes wonderful gifts if she would deny God, but Agnes refused. After this, he attempted to change her answer in many ways, but each time, she was protected by God. Finally, she was condemned to death.

The stories go on to explain that they had first attempted to burn Agnes at the steak, but either the wood would not burn or the flames parted away from her. Finally, after several attempts, the young virgin was beheaded.
