Artist's Description

The korowai my older sister wore on her graduation, it looked amazing!

A korowai is something that is worn with pride when students graduate from university. Sometimes every family has a korowai but sometimes they are lost through the generations and therefore have to borrow from other family members. This particular one was loaned from a family member of ours just for Anas graduation. Very old korowai were made of dog pelt or Kiwi feathers or harakeke fibers with feathers woven through the ‘knots’. The one here is made of cotton and various feathers of kereru, pheasant and most likely pukeko. There is green wool wound up near the top, more for decoration maybe. There would be a story behind it but seeing as it is not my whanau korowai i dont know it.
