An Angel
she appeared to me
and I was caught.
Shamelessly, I claimed her mine.

Strong but fragile
eyes as ice.
I did not know ‘twas artifice -
the love I saw in those blue depths
that stole away my loneliness
and made me shine.

But all in thought – what sights but air?
All mirrors in my Vision’s stare.
The passioned nights
each sigh
each look
all truth?
Nay – for I mistook for love
What I saw –
my dream, my love, my self
in her.
Bathed in light, she prismed Art.
(Obsidian wings shadowed her heart
but I was blind.)

She burned within my artist’s eye.
Excited, I could not deny the urge
to sculpt her image fair,
her skin so soft
her tawny hair
her gaze so pale, so fathomless –
so I, with loving hands, caressed her likeness into shape.
Two glassy wings for her escape.
She was sublime.

In all that time I never guessed –
her lover finally confessed that she was false.
Without a word
without a sound
she shrugged then turned around and left.
Left me behind.

I could not stay my rage.
In pain
I smashed my perfect dream in twain.
Her shattered wings fell all around
crystal teardrops on the ground
and as the scene before me blurred
I saw – as for the first time – her.
Among the bloodied shards I knelt
and hung my head
in shame.
In guilt.
Instead of wings that set her free –
I had forced my love to be a thing imprisoned in my mind

I had designed

an Angel.
