Uncle Joe

I crossed the street, the cobbles slick from the dew point, stepping over the puddles of horse piss and the mounds of horse manure.
I pushed open the door and entered the snug as I had done so many times before; through the blue fug, passed the bar, and followed my nose to the toilets.
Who’d believe me that in 70 years time this backstreet boozer would be an apartment block?
I came back every Samhain, to remember the dead, to pay my respects to my dear beloved mother.
Joe’s free hand steadied him on the porcelain bricks of the toilet wall, the other aimed into the gulley.
This time I pushed his head against the wall with such force that, when I cracked his skull, the blood smeared across the white brick as he fell to the ground.
Next Samhain I wouldn’t exist.
