terminus towns......

I stepped from the train with expectations. My father’s words rang ominously in my ears.
“Never stay in a terminus town. Too much trouble gets offloaded there”.
Enigmatic I know, but they haunted me.
The coastal town was crouched in behind a headland out of the weather. Whilst trudging to the the pub, local paper headlines in wire cages screamed at me.
" 4yo MISSING ", " FEARS HELD ".
The red ink smouldered in the noon-day glare.
Tucking my suitcase under the bar, some old soak morosely muttered, "she takes nine days to give up the dead …… ".
The barman shushed him into silence.
A boy had been plucked from a seductive shelf by a rogue wave whilst crabbing under the headland. The sea was dead calm at the time. They had discovered his whippet jammed between two boulders, back broken and wringing wet.
No boy.
I bought a ticket out again.
