the witness

Harriet’s night world was 15mm. under her bedroom door. She had shared her bedroom for eight years with her elder sister Jane. Now at eight she knew many things.
That sliver of light held witness to everything, everything bounded by passageway and loungeroom that is. Every voice, every shadow and every bump was a narrative she knew well.
Now, the stubby rolling across the boards connected with a previous time, present time and projected time. It was all like a horrible painting that hung itself time and again on her memory .
Harriet was not afraid, just aware. Time and again as a witness she saw, felt and heard. She was there after all.
All was quiet on those dreaded floor boards. No noise, nothing.
A shadow appeared in that 15mm sliver of light.
Light fell into the room when the door inched open.
He had come for Jane again.
