Artist's Description

I snapped this picture just before our second dive of the night at “The Junkyard” on the Sunabae Seawall in Okinawa, Japan. I literally broke my fibula bone on this dive while exiting from deeper water onto the reef. I was pushed to edge of the reef by a wave after I removed my first fin. I was standing on the edge of the reef as I attempted to remove my remaining fin and felt the water receed like a wave was coming. I turned to be humbled (or hobbled) by another wave that was over my head.. It knocked me over as my ankle was leverage locked by a small piece of coral. I went left amd my ankle stayed planted. The worst part was that I could actually hear my bone break underwater—now how eery is that??

As if that wasn’t bad enough, I had to wait for my two buddies to return to their vehicles, take off their dive gear and return to me and take my gear back. To end my lovely evening I had to hop on one foot using my two dive buddies as human crutches across the reef. My hop started where you see reef disappear acoss numerous potholes nooks and slippery moss. Finally up some stairs to my van where this picture was taken.
