Illustration painted in gouache. My late Mum and Dad were both reluctant models for me but would always indulge me. The original artwork was lost by my then agent or the post office depending on who you ask. Luckily I took a decent photograph of the artwork. This is the only painting depicting them together.

Ian Dejardin’s comments: “Rockwell’s characteristic qualities seem to me to be: 1) readability: he can sum up an entire story with a single image; 2) he hints at much wider story behind the image – in other words, he gives you more information than you actually need, so that you form an idea of his characters’ past history, personalities etc.; 3) he is a master of facial expression; 4) his humour is always benign and very human; 5) and finally his works all demonstrate technical virtuosity. In my opinion Michael Haslam’s image has all five of these qualities.”
