On November 11th, 1918, at 11 o’clock in the morning, the end of the First World War took place.

The fact that 20,000 British soldiers were killed on the first day of the ‘Battle of the Somme’ is often recalled with horror. Over 5 million civilians are also estimated to have perished on the European continent alone, under occupation, bombardment, hunger and disease.

November 11th is known as “Armistice Day” or “Remembrance Day” in Great Britain and its Commonwealth countries, and as “Veterans Day” in the United States.

Featured in the A Place to Call Home group, 24/5/12.
