The Cop

I guess the fact that I never even
took my coat off should have been
a sign. I am only passing through.
I can’t stay. You’ll be pushing me out,
anytime now. I won’t fight as hard
to stay in your life as you fight
to keep me out of it. I am not
your puppy dog. Angry liars make up
bitter words, but you used to paint,
and write, and build things.
Why did you let your artist die?
I wish I knew you then. Maybe
you weren’t so cynical, or angry
Maybe we could have been a fiery, passionate
something instead of cold and fleeting
nothing. But you are not that man,
that artist. You are a sad man
who has given up. You have a heavy heart
and heavy hands, that someday
would have choked my spirit
