The Handshake

When I touched your hand
I felt your pain
your sorrow
your suffering.
The smile on your face
The twinkle in your eye
All expressed a joyful reunion.
But your hand
the hand
the pain.
And I remember the touch as if it were yesterday,
the gentle grip
the soft wrinkled skin
the warmth of a good heart.
I remember the rush of feeling
the flood
the overwhelming flood of emotion
It washed over me like water poured from a bucket.
I developed the tears
your tears
your pain.
Even in this place of forgiveness
this place af sanctuary
this place of peace
Your pain showed.
So what brought you here?
Was it for redemption?
Was it for forgiveness?
Was it for relief?
All I know
That in that one handshake
that one instance of connection
that one gesture of fellowship
that one moment in time
I shared your pain.
