Artist's Description

This lovely rock formation was just off the beach on the island off Samana. The Dominican Republic is a very poor island in the Carrib. Developers are working now to develop the penninsula called Samana…….. Huge all inclusive hotel/resorts are popping up and beaches are being built with white sand to attract tourists and cruise ships. While there is no port there, boats tender you ashore. There is no substancial town yet to browse around or shopping to speak of, yet is is the islands of the Carrib as they would have been in the 1950’s or even earlier, I guess. The crime rate is high due to the extensive amount of poverty. This is not an island you want to explore by yourself. We opted for a tour guided trip to an out island patroled to keep it private.
