Artist's Description

Here I am at 2 years old sitting on Sants’s knee.

Every Christmas Mom and I would take the bus down into Newark, N.J. for some Christmas Shopping and a visit to see Santa for me. In those days, downtown Newark, N.J. was a great shopping center.

Some of the large department store were Bambergers (A Macy’s Store), Orbach,Kleins on the Square, and Haynes. Hundreds of clothing and shoe stores dotted Broad Street and you could buy almost anyting you wanted there. It was second best to shopping in NYC. The Bus ran 1 block from our house all the way down South Orange Avenue and we could get off at Broad and Market Streets in Newark. That was the heart of the city.

My Mom would always take me to Orbachs on the second floor where they had a train tha rain along the ceiling all through the second floor. I can remember standing in line with many other children waiting my turn to get on the train. When you got off the train, you were in another line which lead you to Santa. I firmly believed that I had to go see Santa and tell him exactly what I wanted for Christmas or I would not get it. I did not trust my Christmas list that I had mailed to him…..I wanted to tell him in person. How wonderful the miracle of Christmas is for young children.

After the required visit to Santa had been completed we continued all the way down to Haynes Department store for lunch in “The Pine Room”. This lovely restaurant was indeed all pine paneled and seated a couple of hundred people at a time. It was located on the first floor of the Haynes Department Store. My favorite lunch was a cream cheese and olive sandwich with a brownie ala mode for dessert. If you haven’ t tried a cream cheese and sliced green olive sandwhich, don’t knock it until you try it. I sitll love them today!

We would do all our shopping and Mom would have every package delivered to our home via UPS. She never carried packages home from the store. I don’t even think you can do that any more, but in those days, the sales girls would ask, “Do you want to take it, or send it.”.

These times are great memories for me. Such special times with my Mom.
