This Stone

You took this stone from the garden, one of the many
And placed it on your mantle in a central place.
Its angles and surfaces received your light in new and interesting ways.
You took loving care of this stone, and put it on a clean and soft doily
and kept it free of the dust that quickly settled on it.
Your happiness and love was showered on this stone, but it just sat there
being what it was, reflecting nothing, this stone’s stony silence.
Time passed and this stone was put on a shelf,
you looked at it once in a while, at the light that behaved in the same way,
the care was still there, but how long can you love a stone?
In the end you needed more from your shelf space
And put this stone back in the garden.

Do not lose your love on this stone,
for I can’t give it back.
