Artist's Description

Sun Turtle, one of my hand painted drums from 2004, was inspired by indigenous influence.

Many Natives refer to North America as Turtle Island, because their legends say that when the earth was covered with water that stretched across the world, Turtle dove to the bottom of the oceans bringing up earth on its back so that the people could have a safe and dry home. Turtle is at home anywhere because it carries its home on its back. It does not become attached to places, for it is free to search for new opportunities wherever they may be found. When turtle senses danger, or is in an uncomfortable or insecure setting, turtle withdraws into it’s shell, and is protected. Turtle represents strength, feminine energy, fertility, long life, perseverance and “Mother Earth.”

Sun represents the life giving force, warmth, growth and all that is good. The rays signify the four directions and repetition of life on earth. Sun is associated with the place of emergence.

Acrylic. Edited in photoshop elements 6 for background color/lighting and paint to brighten colors.
