Artist's Description

This is an enhanced photo of my friend Jean giving me a beautiful agate from out of the creek behind her house in Wyoming. I believe the year was 1996. I spent Christmas that year with Cindy and her mother and also Jean. Jean died last year and I’ve been thinking of her this night and of Cindy too, so decided to make this as a gift for Cindy. I have written a poem to go with it.

Aside from my faithful companion “Miss Fluff” my kitty, I’ve been alone this Christmas and while I do not mind at all the solitude I’ve been sad. It’s been a time of prayer and reflection. A time of missing loved ones no longer with us.

It is not unusual for me to get creative whenever grief comes to call and so this is what I’m doing. This one is in memory of Jean Ewing.

A PS to this one, in the photo to the left if you look really close you will see a woman’s hand pointing at something. That is Jean’s mother and I’ve often wondered why we did not recall seeing her there when Cindy took the photo. She died not long after this photo was taken.
The Gift

Standing at the edge
of a creek
she called “Grandmother’s”
she leaned down
and from the waters
plucked a sacred stone

Rising up she turned
“This one was calling
your name”
and she gave it
to me.

A sacred stone
from Grandmother’s
flowing through
Grandmother’s land

a place of
quiet beauty
at the foot of sacred
where once buffalo
roamed and a
graceful tribal people
lived in peace
at one
with heaven
and earth

I am ever grateful
for the gift you gave to me
my Old Friend
when you
invited me to
and shared
the mountains and
the wheel and most of all
introduced me
to Jean.
I love you
