Kokoda 1942

Our old mate Vic Cross passed away this morning… very sad. I wrote this poem for him last week. When I read it to him his comment was: Bloody wonderful for someone who wasn’t there. Which I took as the best possible comment ever. Vic will be sadly missed.

Two thousand feet of near vertical climb
The mud so thick and the pack like lead
Our rifles oft held over our heads
And the leather of our boots turns to slime.

But climb we must, there’s no other way
To cross this land and take our stand
So we inch up this bloody hill
Clawing our way with toe and with hand.

All too often we pause to fight
Repelling the Jap as oft as we might
He bravely comes forth to engage us again and again
But he don’t understand us Aussie men.

We don’t leave our wounded
And We carry our dead
Or more correctly I say the black angels do
Without them fuzzy wuzzies we’d all be through.

Strangely enough our supplies come through
Not much tucker and a Bob or two
Those brave young Chocko’s hard at work
Slaving away in Morseby is surely no lurk.

But finely we won I’m not sure how
The Poms wouldn’t help, that Churchill cow.
So we fought and we fought in ways like men possessed
And many a mate found his eternal rest

They talk of us now as fierce warriors all,
We were only young lads answering the call
We fought and we climbed through all the pain
And we hope in God’s name it never happens again.
