Artist's Description

In June of 2007 the area of Sydney and the Hunter experienced storms not seen in 100 years. In the industrial city of Newcastle big tankers sit on the horizon waiting to be called in and loaded. During these storms on the 8th of June the tanker “Pasher Bulker” run aground on Nobbys Beach as the storm set on a path it couldn’t get out of.

This is an amazing site and drew thousands of visitors to the Newcastle area, camera shops were packed with people buying film and blowing the dust off cameras that were sitting in the closet and of a morning the beach walkway was packed with people. When I took this shot a guy next to me said, “I should have been at work 30 minutes ago”. The sound of the waves hitting the hull sounded like thunder in the distance.

As a joke someone even listed the ship on Ebay and attracted bids up to 16 million, but the condition of sale was the winner had to removed the boat at their own expense. Funny stuff.

They got the boat off almost a month later, a feat that I personally didn’t believe would happen as they had a few failed attempts.
