Artist's Description

My sisters and I took a boat ride which ended up at Fort Scammel in the Harbor at Portland, Maine. Fort Scammel is one fascinating place! The first remarkable part of it was that before we got inside, it was about 82 degrees outside. Inside it was about 50 degrees. Being a person who prefers cool to heat, I LOVED it.
This picture shows chambers in the underground part of the fort where the artillery(cannons) was housed. You can see the grooves in the floor where the heavy cannons were rolled back and forth for reloading and aiming. On the way in we had seen 400 lb cannonballs.
The architecture in these underground bastions is incredible. This particular one was built in 1858 as part of a series of forts to protect Portland Harbor.
