Artist's Description

This is part of Burial Hill and the steeple of the
First Congregational Church. The first burials in the cemetary were in the 1620’s. The last burial was in 1957. In the beginning the gravestones were made of carved wood. None of them exists today. Stone markers were likely used starting in mid-17th century. Today, the oldest known stone is that of Edward Gray, 1681.
