A Cassin’s Finch (Carpodacus cassinii) photographed moments after bathing in the small pool behind him. His wet raspberry red head and breast feathers looked striking in the early morning sun and his overall appearance was very amusing (or perhaps it’s just my sense of humour!)

The breeding habitat of this finch is coniferous forest in the mountains of western North America as far south as northern New Mexico and Arizona and also near Baja California. They move to lower elevations in winter. They nest in large conifers and mainly eat seeds, buds and berries and will also eat some insects.

This bird was named after John Cassin, who was a curator at the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences.

Photographed early morning at Cabin Lake, Oregon, USA.

Canon 40D
1/320sec f8 ISO 200
