This House

As the season slowly begins to change…
My thoughts turn toward how much in life,
Remains the same.

For nineteen years I have dwelt in the same house on the same street…
Opening my house and my heart to various ones I did meet.

Counting my sons and one time family one time friends…
Over the years, no less than twenty-five people,
Have shared my house, several, on and off again.

There’s been children and children’s children,
There’s been in-laws and ex-wives, without a doubt …
There’s been those in need of a hand-up,
And there’s been a few,
Just looking for a handout.

Regardless all the while one thing has remained the same…
This old house and I have seen a lot of happiness,
And we’ve seen our fair share of pain.

A sanctuary encompassed and provided by God’s grace,
Is exactly how I’ve always felt…
A mansion by no means, yet room enough for so many,
To have once dwelt.

Not simply a structure of plaster, wood and stone…
Thanks to my darling little wife,
This house is at long last,
A warm and loving home!
