Summer is well upon me as temperatures soar and the humidity weighs me down…
The air seems thick with moisture as beads of sweat collect in the furrow of my brow,
Until they finally overflow and drop silently to the ground.

Beads of sweat dropping silently to the ground…
As I continue my labor,
I watch as each droplet slowly evaporates until none can be found.

What’s this image that comes suddenly to my mind,
A silhouette with thorns tightly wrapped around the brow,
Rust colored droplets of sweat having mixed with blood,
From the silhouette of which they now completely surround.

The stinging in my eyes as I quickly wipe more sweat from my brow,
Realizing there would be no such relief for me,
If my arms were out stretched and securely bound.

I pause for a moment and see my own silhouette on the pavement below…
And it occurs to me as with all long suffering,
Death also comes painfully slow.

I labor on, a bit more mindful of the sacrifice once made for all…
Remembering such sufferings,
Somehow makes life’s daily problems,
Now seem, rather small.

And so the next time I cast a shadow and see my silhouette,
On the ground or upon a wall…
Would that I quickly remember, grace by design,
Casts a shadow so great it covers me even when I fall.
