Time Spent Alone

Time Spent Alone

I suppose that it is time for me to admit that I am somewhat leery about telling people that I am a visionary to the extreme. I have always seen myself going places and having things well before I had a clue as to what a visionary was. My thoughts and visions stem from deep within my heart and they are enhanced and nurtured from time spent alone.

Quite a few of my writings have taken place outside, while enjoying my time in the presence of my very own company. In fact, my poem around The Expansionism Movement came to me as I was walking through Sacramento City College; the vision hit me with such and overwhelming force that the only option I had was to stop everything at that very moment, and commence to writing. When I do write outside, it is usually under the umbrella of trees or near a body of water.

Being alone for me, creates an air of clarity. I am not under the pressure of the television, nor the many, many opinions of other people; I find it to be very helpful for the mind, body and soul. This is a private time between myself and God. Being alone grants me that inner peace, which in turn affords space for God’s message to me to flow in without disruption.

That simple fact is of the utmost importance to me because I am not one for conforming to the standards of others, or lending myself to their scrutiny. I truly believe that dreams are accomplished and living legends exist because those very people chose to not listen to the masses, but rather spend time alone and listen to what’s on their hearts. I feel these people are a prime example of a combination of courage, spirituality and determination.

There is a good chance that I view courage a little bit differently than many people. When we engage in viewing what’s popular on television, courage often comes wrapped in a very colorful packaged; large muscles and artillery for a small war are usually intertwined. Courage for me is the ability to stand alone and sit alone, to be faced with the fact that to a very large degree all we have in life is ourselves. This is not to discredit the numerous family and friends who have and continue to help me; rather than that, the courage to sit alone allows me the luxury of embracing myself…..in totality… the negative as well as the positive attributes that combine to make one Marques Hicks.

Time spent alone helps me to analyze myself, my life and my direction. I get to review my conduct and adjust what needs adjusting and enhance what is working in my favor. Being alone helps me realign myself when I am off balance, which I feel happens to all humans regularly. It’s being able to pause and reflect, take shame and guilt head on and finally discard it. I refresh and recharge myself by spending quality time alone, as well as remind my heart of what truly matters to me. I know for certain that all my answers to peace and happiness are seeded within me. My job is to search for those answers, recognize when I have found them, nurture those seeds to stimulate growth and share with the world this fascinating discovery. Being alone is really pleasing.

Situations and circumstances always change, even I change with time. What mustn’t change is me spending quality time alone to keep close parameters on myself and my well being. Time spent alone is more than a habit….it is a must.
