Artist's Description

Part of my Atlanta Icons series.

The Roxy opened as the Buckhead Theater in 1930, one of the first purpose-built for movies with sound in the Atlanta area. It would change hands several times before becoming the Atlanta Coca Cola Roxy, a place to see live music in the now infamous Buckhead bar district.

When I left Atlanta, the Roxy was closed for renovations following a push to move the notorious bar scene out of Buckhead district after making the headlines a few too many times. I haven’t been back since, but the photos I saw since the Roxy reopened, once more under the name Buckhead Theater, makes me glad I have a few images of the Roxy that was. It’s much more sedate and the old marquee so many will remember from the 90’s and early 2000’s is now gone. I think it’s safe to say the Roxy is truly gone, but those who loved it will I think enjoy the nostalgia of this photo.
