Artist's Description

Built by the Maya sometime between the 10th and 13th centuries, this step pyramid is the focal point of Chichen Itza. It served as a temple to the Maya god, Kukulcan. El Castillo was restored to its current state in the 1920’s and 1930’s by the Mexican Government. It was once open to be climbed but was closed in recent years.

Due to it’s proximity to Cancun, for many tourists visiting the Mexican resort town, Chichen Itza will be their only exposure to the ancient Maya.

Chichen Itza is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
