This wasn’t taken with my shiny new DSLR but rather a borrowed fujifilm finepix ‘point and click’ two and a half years ago.
It was taken in ‘La Loco’ nightclub Paris , next door to the famous Moulin Rouge, on 23rd October 2005 when New Model Army played their 25th anniversary concert.
NMA are an English band widely known for their unwavering commitment to their original vision of music and performance and voicing political views in their lyrics. They are often labelled as a punk band & have also been classified as post-punk, folk rock, indie rock, gothic rock, rock noir and even metal amongst others.
There uncompromising attitude has caused them problems. On their first appearance on ‘Top of the Pops’ ( THE British music show in the seventies and eighties) to play ‘No rest for the Wicked’ they were wearing t-shirts with the message “Only Stupid B*****ds use Heroin” (without the asterisks lol). They were given tape to cover the message up, because of the swear word, and were told that they had to use it. They did as they were told but they cut it so thinly that the message was still visable. It was their first and last appearence on the show.
Because of the media’s decision to virtually ignore them they are more of a ‘cult’ band than mainstream despite a catalogue of outstanding music. However after a brief flirtation with a major label, EMI, they now control all their music, tours, albums and the fact that they’ve been able to continue for what is now nearly 28 years is a testament to them.
Justin Sullivan, shown here, is the lead singer and the only surviving member of the original three members of NMA. Stuart Morrow left early on and Robert Heaton left in 1998 due to ill health and sadly died of pancreatic cancer in November 2004.
