Unwanted Fame

As the baby moved and gurgled the mother was overcome with joy. She stroked his skin whilst taking in his colour and radiance. She smelled his skin and dissolved into a heap of tears. Watching her broke his masculine defences. Deep emotions, rising from deep within, cracked through his tough exterior like molten lava.

Outside doctors huddled whilst agitated nurses busied themselves accomplishing nothing. They all knew that they’d done the best they could. Some had seen the newborn and were too emotional to speak.

Reporters were already baying. The reception had been converted into an acropolis filled with press and their cameras. The burliest and meanest paparazzi were stationed at the front, pacing like lions waiting for their prey. Hospital security were as paper in the face of an inferno.

A familiar face popped round the door. Tired eyes looked up and nodded as the consultant entered.

‘Isn’t he wonderful?’ she gushed, as she cradled the new life in her arms. Her mascara was smudged and her face blotched. She looked up at the man in white, desperate for affirmation.

Silence hung in the room.

‘Yes. He is.’

A minute passed.

‘I’m sorry, but I need to know what you plan to do.’ He paused. ‘It won’t be long before the news breaks out..’

Her heart felt like it would break in two and she began to sob once again.

‘Things haven’t changed’ she said with a resolve which surprised them all. ‘I want my baby to grow up as normal as possible. We leave through the front door like everyone else.’

An hour later they left their room, their newborn dressed head to toe. It’ll keep out the cold she’d explained.

It was as if they’d walked into a bear trap during a lightening storm. Questions, lenses and abuse poked at them like sharp sticks. ‘Show us the kid’ they shouted, every moment beamed live around the globe.

Once safely in the taxi they quickly left the mob behind. The taxi driver caught their eye. ‘Have you heard the news? Apparently Pistachio and Hazel have bred a nutter!’
