The Gift

It was her birthday and I knew just what she wanted. There was no way anyone could get it for her, except for me of course. What’s more, mine would be freshly caught. I’d already planned the trap and had the rare but deadly bait ready.

What a party! There were hundreds there and I was in my element. I’d set the trap and knew it was only a matter of time before it sprang. I knew I’d get the adulation of the crowd for what would be the greatest and costliest present of all.

Drink was in full flow, and the music was loud.

My mobile vibrated and a smile curled across my lips. I checked the message and sure enough, my trap had sprung. I allowed myself to glow in the self satisfaction of my success. I couldn’t wait for the gasps of the revellers. They’d bathe in my brilliance.

I excused myself and made my way outside. I’d set the trap in a field next to the house. Yes, it had cost a small fortune, but it was going to be so worth it. I entered the blacked out prefabricated building from the back, away from the lights. Despite my assuredness by heart was pounding – for it was not every day you came face to face with one of these. I checked my phone once again .There was no point going in there if I hadn’t caught it. The smug smile crept across my face.

Just as I was about to pull the bolt my life turned upside down. The walls became the ceiling then the floor and I lost all sense of direction. I felt as if I was made of iron for I could not move as I felt catapulted upwards. The movement stopped and I smashed against the floor as the ceiling was ripped off. I was blinded by the brightest light and I heard a voice roar a thousand times louder than the wildest sea.

‘Here’s the gift I promised you. A crafty little so and so he is too.’
