What is this woman doing? She was sitting there, quite relaxed, but totally absorbed in her task – she never noticed me. On the left she has a great pile of some kind of herb (it looks like carrot greens to me but that’s probably not what it is) which she brought here in a blue plastic bag. Did she just buy that on the market? Or is it a harvest from her little garden plot hidden away somewhere? What she is doing now is make neat, small bundles of the plants which then go into the bowl on the right. I suspect those bundles are intended to be sold at the market.
Again, this is in a hutong in the middle of the great city, no more than 15 minutes walking from Tian An Men square, but it seems a rural scene. (See map link above for the location!)
