Actually, this was Plan B, but Plan A was closed… I’d been to the Sunday market near Ashgabat twice already, so I wanted to do something different, there’s plenty to see in Turkmenistan’s capital. So, I walked to the Botanical garden which turned out to be a lush, green oasis in a bustling city on the edge of the desert…

The garden seems to be organized much like the one in Tashkent, divided into plots for geographical areas planted with plants (or at least trees) native to those areas. I suspect this is typical for Central Asian botanical gardens that were started during the era when the republics were still part of the Soviet Union. This sign says:
     Nr. 14

indicating that this plot (nr. 14) is dedicated to plants from Crimea and the Caucasus. I’m not sure if that makes botanical sense, but I’ve seen this grouping before.

This way of organizing a botanical garden is one reason I took this photo; the other is to show just how lush and green this garden is – in a city on the edge of the desert. You’ll have to imagine the chorus of birdsong and the continuous wafts of delicious scents from flowers and greenery.
