Part of my Beautiful brick series, this is a mosaic at the same time, put together from different types and colors of brick.
The figure is the dual-headed eagle which features in the coat of arms of the city of Groningen
It is located in that city on the wall of the bridgekeeper’s house of the Herebrug. (A “bridgekeeper” does not so much “guard” as operate the bridge, making sure both shipping and road traffic (including pedestrians) can safely cross.) According to a Dutch Wikipedia page the current bridge dates from 1953.
Groningen used to be a center of the brickmaking industry, with several brick factories located around the city, usually alongside a canal to ensure easy transportation.
