On the markets, bazars and suqs of the Middle East and Central Asia, vendors do their utmost to display their wares attractively, sometimes in really artful ways, even of the most mundane things. I never tire of taking pictures of these displays.

This was taken on the bazar of Samarkand. What is stacked here? Your guesses are welcome…

Update: Hélène David-Cuny came up with the correct answer: it’s soap! The soap is produced in the form of ‘breads’ and then (usually) cut up into blocks like these before it’s sold.
