During the summer it can get very hot in Buchara – even when I was there during the spring in 2009 it would get over 40°C in the afternoon. This is the reason many walls in Old Bukhara are whitewashed or have a light-colored plaster, and most houses have a courtyard, preferably with a tree, where one can always find some shade.

It was already hot when I took this picture, from the hot and dusty street; the wall is white, the courtyard door is white, and you can just see a mature tree peeking above the wall. I could just imagine how pleasant it would be to sit in that courtyard.
