Two big machines left on the roadside.

To our rich, western eyes they look abandoned, too old to be functional any more. But are they?

Probably not. Not really. This is in Tajikistan, a very, very poor country, consisting almost entirely of mountains. Roads are vital for the struggling economy, but constantly damaged by the harsh nature in this environment, covered by landslides, or parts just washed away. There is simply no money for new machinery for maintenance (while a lot of new road building is done by the Chinese, who bring their own.) So although I cannot be sure – they just sat there – my guess is these are actually in working condition, just waiting to get back to work at the next landslide.
