This is an area in France known as “Les Dombes” in Ain.
The area consists of a network of large ponds and lakes (man-made).
Rather like the crop rotation method of farming, these ponds are drained and cultivated using the duck and fish faecal matter, which collects on the bottom, as fertiliser. Local restaurants, of course, use the carpe and frogs’ legs as a delicacy.
