Painted in acrylics on board, using some watercolour techniques for the foliage. This is a small painting and will be available as a card only.
We find the voles very close to my home on the West Coast of South Africa. They live in a thorny bush that they have turned into a multi-storey home with neatly trimmed corridors. Voles are extremely shy and even a slight movement behind a window will make them scatter for shelter.
In Thornburn’s Mammals they are listed with rats and mice. But they are sweeter-looking than rats! He names BANK VOLES,ORKNEY VOLES WATER VOLES and FIELD VOLES. Ours must be field voles.
Thornburn (The complete illustrated Thornburn’s Mammals (Wordsworth Editions, Limited 1997) claims that voles are rat-sized and distinguished from mice by their shorter tails, ears and hind feet, blunter snouts, smaller eyes and longer fur. They also differ in a more completely vegetarian diet.
